The idea of the project was to renovate GAZ-69A by involving students, including the Commission of Juveniles, but also youth who are interested in cars by offering them an opportunity to do something with their hands, to share some necessary skills about mechanics, car repairing and knowledge about car history.
Hiiumaa Military-historical Association has planned the renovation of GAZ-69A already a long time ago. There is still most of the necessary details and units, people who know the construction of the car by heart and could share their knowledge and activity during the process. GAZ-69A is an "elementary car" which is built by using different details as minimum as possible. Also many details and units are universal - in other words they are in use on other cars too - "Pobeda", GAZ-51 and "Volga".
The renovation was organized in workshops. The first workshop took place on 14th November 2009 in Hiiumaa Military Museum in Tahkuranna. |

They organized workshops for students (boys) where they renovated the historical car GAZ-69A.
Boys learned from the best specialists; they become acquainted with historical vehicles and war-machines in the Museum of Military-history; they learned the custom to work, to end what they have started, to plan time and they also received specific acknowledge about the construction of motor, chemical protection of rust, car completion, work of saddler etc. |

The project offered interesting activity for young boys and some of them could even become a car mechanic or if not then they just received necessary skills for live.
Young people who were addressed by Juvenile Commission had the chance to act wisely. They also made a car that is in running order and nice for the eye.
Car GAZ 69A was renovated-repaired by young people who could use the help of professionals. Young boys had the chance to deal with something interesting and feasible and got the courage to do similar activities in the future: everything is possible, even in the post-modern nowadays.
The military-historical museum got new guests and offered their acknowledge about one of the most significant period in Hiimaa history - occupation of Soviet Union which, unfortunately, will be quite uncomprehending for pupils. The interest of youth was vivifying and even bigger than the project manager expected.
Young people are good resource of employment and they can be sure of their career choices. GAZ will be driving on Hiiumaa island's roads as the good example of good work and go-ahead spirit of youth. The military museum has made new young friends - boys who are interested in history and technique.
Involved professionals got experiences in teaching.
Media's impact to Hiiumaa as a tourism destination was positive and thus it helped to improve the economy of the island. |
| Experiences/lessons learned: |
It is important that young boys would learn how to work together with grown-ups, would receive skills, knowledge, self-discipline and rules of successful work from older people.
Professional mechanics also learned a lesson because it was their first experience being a teacher.
