Project title: Progeny of orchestra "Türi"
MEASURE: Leader
Measure name: Leader measure
Theme: youth
Keywords: orchestra
Start year: 2009
Local action group: LAG South-Järvamaa Partnership
Name of the beneficiary: NGO Lõuna-Järvamaa Arendusühing
Homepage: http://www.ljarva.ee/
Sum of support: 6 720 EUR
Backround of the project: Orchestra TÜRI is a voluntary union. The aim is to promote wind instrument music, to connect people who are interested in wind-instrument music and to offer something useful for youth to spend their spare time with.

The orchestra started in 2002 and it involves about 30-35 musicians. There was a situation where the calculations showed that the number of people who were leaving the orchestra was bigger than the number of people who were joining it. Young people leave the orchestra mostly because of entering the university and there isn't many young people who want to start learning a wind instrument any-more. Wind instrument playing isn't so popular spare time activity as doing sports or spending time in youth centres.

Therefore they came up to a good idea to start presenting and promoting wind instrument play and thereby to get new members in the orchestra.
Main activities: Training programme. Project management.
Project involved organizing orchestra concertos in local schools and kindergartens wherein the performers presented different wind instruments types to children. Also they presented the action and studying opportunities of Türi Music School.
They got very good feedback from children. They formed specific flute, clarinet, saxophone, drum and the brass ensembles to present different musical instruments. They also organized wind instrument trainings.

They involved also wind instrument instructors from Türi Music School and from other schools and they also started the negotiations with foreign conductors.
Output and results indicators: Participants and especially young people had the chance to get more knowledge about the activities of orchestra and ensemble through the project.

Concertos were organized the way that audience could ask questions during the concerto. They involved about 20 people into the activities of Türi orchestra and diversified their spare time activities as the result of the project. The children of Imavere, Väätsa and Türi municipalities get some information about wind instrument music - which instruments and how easy or difficult it is to play. People who were interested in some certain musical instrument could do it also during the project.

When the project ended they involved new young people into the orchestra from rural areas. Young people who weren't interested in wind instruments before, got a new hobby. Being the member of orchestra young people could get new information about wind instruments and playing it, get valuable experiences about performing and an opportunity to travel - the orchestra participates on different festivals, concertos and singing festivals. The participants learn how to cooperate, to consider each other, to communicate with young people who have similar interests and to get more friends and acquaintances.
Experiences/lessons learned: Grown-ups must present different spare-time activities to young people because they are very receptive about everything new and interesting.
